What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is an eye condition that directly damages the optic nerve (the bundle of nerve fibers that carries information from the eye to the brain). This damage is often caused by an increased pressure in the eye, known as intraocular pressure (IOP). The optic nerve is crucial for vision, and if it becomes damaged, it can lead to permanent vision loss and blindness.

How do I recognize Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is known as the "silent thief of sight" as it progresses slowly and without noticeable problems in its early stages. However, as the condition advances, symptoms may become more apparent. It's important to notice them on time, otherwise significant permanent vision loss may happen.

  1. Loss of peripheral vision
  2. Tunnel vision (narrowed vision)
  3. Blurred vision
  4. Halos around lights
  5. Headache and eye pain
  6. Changes in eye color
  7. Red eyes

Additionally risk of glaucoma increases with age, certain medications (like steroids), diabetes, high blood pressure and family history. If you are in any of the following groups it is important to get checked early for hidden signs of Glaucoma so that further progression Can be prevented leading to minimal to no vision loss.

Treatment options available

Early detection is of paramount importance when it comes to Glaucoma as it shows little to no symptoms at early stage but continues to progress silently and worsens with time. We offer effective early diagnosis for glaucoma and various treatment modalities such as:

  1. Prescription Eye Drops: Eye drops increase the outflow of fluid (aqueous humor) from the eye, and reduce intraocular pressure or decrease the production the fluid.
  2. Oral Medications: In some cases when eye drops are not effective oral medications may be prescribed, particularly for certain types of glaucoma.
  3. Laser Peripheral Iridotomy (LPI): Used for angle-closure glaucoma, this procedure creates a small hole in the iris to improve drainage.
  4. Laser Trabeculoplasty: This procedure is often used for open-angle glaucoma and involves applying laser energy to the trabecular meshwork to enhance drainage.
  5. Trabeculectomy: This is a no-injection no-pad surgical procedure that creates a new drainage channel for the aqueous humor to reduce intraocular pressure.
  6. Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS): Newer surgical techniques that involve less tissue disruption than traditional surgeries.
  7. Drainage Implants: Sometimes a drainage tube shunt may be surgically implanted to help drain excess fluid from the eye.
  8. Regular Monitoring: Regardless of the treatment method, we provide regular monitoring and follow-up appointments to assess the effectiveness of the treatment and make adjustments as needed.
